[ The short answer ]
Clay is infrastructure for building GTM workflows, made for GTM engineers who build enrichment tables and plays. upcell is an account-based prospecting platform: reps work their named accounts in Prospector, and every data provider you connect runs on every contact. If you’d rather have one contact database with sequences built in, Apollo is another alternative to look at.
Pick
Clay
if
A GTM engineer builds lists and plays centrally.
Also consider
Apollo, for one database with sequences built in.
What you’re actually replacing
Teams prospect in one of two ways: ops or GTM engineers build lists centrally and hand them to reps, or reps prospect their own named accounts. Clay is built for the first way. upcell is built for the second.
Centrally built lists. Clay describes itself as “infrastructure to get any data, run agentic workflows, and launch GTM plays,” and says “GTM engineers build on Clay.” A specialist designs the table, picks the data sources and decides what reaches the reps.
Rep-driven prospecting. In Prospector, the account comes first. A rep opens an account, sees the contacts already on it and who owns them, and adds the people still missing. Data from every connected provider is already on each record.
Two questions usually settle it:
Who builds your prospect lists today: a GTM engineer, or the reps who own the accounts?
Where do your reps spend their day: in a table someone built for them, or on their own accounts?
Every provider on every contact
In upcell, every data provider you connect runs on every contact, and all the emails and phone numbers they return are shown. When two or more providers return the same value, it appears once, with each provider’s icon.
Clay’s waterfall works differently. Clay says it will “search sequentially across multiple tools until you find a valid match.”
How multi-vendor enrichment works in upcell:
Your keys, from any provider. You buy API keys directly from each provider and plug them in. upcell’s own data is one of the providers you can connect. upcell doesn’t resell keys.
Everything that lands gets enriched. Contacts from LinkedIn and Sales Navigator, captured one at a time or in bulk, run through every connected provider.
Each provider keeps its own fields. Results sync to your CRM, with each provider writing to its own fields.
Overlap you can act on. Because every provider runs on every contact, admins can see where two providers return the same data and drop one without losing coverage.

Built for reps on accounts
Prospector organizes prospecting around the account: every contact lands on its account with an owner, a sequence and tags. Reps find the people they still need from AI-Sourced suggestions, from LinkedIn, or from the accounts already in your CRM.
AI-Sourced contacts by ICP fit
Prospector suggests contacts on each account based on your ICP. An AI summary on each suggestion tells the rep why they should reach out to that person.
Prospect from LinkedIn
The upcell Chrome extension adds a badge to LinkedIn profiles and Sales Navigator prospects. One click sends the contact to Prospector:
the rep who clicked becomes the owner;
the contact is matched to its account;
every connected provider enriches it straight away;
it syncs to your CRM and sequencer.
Each rep can set hotkeys that apply their own tags and a sequence on export. Reps can also export up to 25 contacts at a time, including from Sales Navigator.
Your CRM accounts, in Prospector
Prospector connects to HubSpot and Salesforce, so reps see their CRM accounts in upcell. Sync covers contact data, account owners, the sequence each contact is in, and tags. For Outreach and Salesloft, Prospector syncs your sequence lists, so reps can drop a contact into the sequence they want.
Other Clay alternatives by use case
Which alternative fits depends on what you want Clay to do. Here are three common choices, each suited to a different way of working.
Apollo: one database plus sequences. Apollo pairs its own contact database with built-in sequencing, so a team can find contacts and reach them in one product. It suits teams that would rather have one vendor for data and outreach than a workflow builder. See Apollo alternatives.
ZoomInfo: one large database for big organizations. ZoomInfo sells access to its own contact and company database, and counts more than half of the Fortune 500 among its customers. It suits organizations that want one established data source shared across many teams. See ZoomInfo alternatives.
upcell: reps on named accounts. upcell runs every data provider you connect on every contact and organizes the work by account in Prospector. It suits teams whose reps prospect their own accounts and want data from more than one provider on each record.
upcell vs Clay at a glance
upcell and Clay take different approaches: upcell is a workspace where reps prospect by account, and Clay is infrastructure for building GTM workflows. Both offer unlimited users and let you use your own API keys.

When Clay is the better fit
Clay is the better fit when a specialist builds your lists centrally and your plays go beyond prospecting. Stay with Clay if:
a GTM engineer or ops team builds lists and hands them to reps (“GTM engineers build on Clay”);
you run multi-step workflows across many tools, which Clay calls “agentic workflows” and “GTM plays”;
your plays include Claygent research agents, an inbound SDR agent or signals tracking, such as job changes and promotions.
Running Clay and upcell together
You can run both: keep Clay for centrally built plays, and give reps upcell for their accounts. The connection runs one way, from Clay to upcell’s data API.
upcell inside Clay. Clay users can call upcell’s data API from Clay.
Not Clay inside upcell. Clay can’t be connected to upcell as a provider. Connect the providers themselves with your own API keys.
Setup. RevOps plugs in the API keys, and upcell helps with field mapping if needed.
Where accounts come from. Prospector doesn’t import CSVs. It connects to HubSpot and Salesforce, so reps start from the accounts already in your CRM.
